Beloit College has came up with a list I find very interesting. A few things on the list I find to be true, however I find some that are false. Many of the things on the list our generation has just plain forgotten about, but we did learn about it at some point.
The first one that I disagree with is that few in the class know how to write in cursive. Everyone was taught it when younger, but many of us have forgotten how to write it. While learning cursive we were required to use it all of the time, but after awhile we didn't use it at all. I remember taking the ACT's and having to write the paragraph on the back in cursive and I didn't know how to do it. I believe everyone can write a little bit in cursive.
Another one I disagree with is toothpaste tubes stand on their caps. I can't say I have ever seen a tube of toothpaste that stands on the cap. I agree with Beethoven being a good name for a dog. It seems like many movies have a dog named Beethoven in them. However, when I hear Beethoven I think of only the composer not a dog.
Many of the things on the list I can say I dont know what they are talking about, which proves the point of the list. Our generation has grown up in a time where new items are continuously being made. The list is just showing how much things change over a period of time.
I think you made some great points in your post. Our generations are moving on with more and more new technology that shadows what used to be normal and "hi-tech." Nicely done. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the points you made. I remember takng the ACT too, and forgetting how to write some of the letters in cursive haha.
ReplyDeleteYou have some good thoughts. I agree that cursive is still known to many students in our generation, though we may not know it as extensively as the former generations. I have, surprisingly, seen tooth paste tubes that stand up. I think it is Aquafresh that has a large flat bottomed lid. I've also seen a few that look like soap dispensers. All in all, you had a lot of points that I could really agree with. When you discussed how you were unfamiliar with many of the names, I completely understood. Nice blog! (:
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the ACT cursive part of your blog. I felt so stupid when I couldn't write it. I like how you kind of made fun of some other things they put on there because really, most of it we have never heard of.
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you on the ACT I kinda forgot how to write cursive and Beethoven is a great dog name.
ReplyDeleteWell Done!
I still know Beethoven to be a dog's name. You brought up some great points about our childhood. It kind of makes me wonder what I will be able to look back on a few years from now and say, "I remember when we did that!"
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to feel kind of old!
Good job!
I looked at the Beethoven thing and went why is it a good dog's name, I never used it. Then again who wants to yell that when they're trying to sort cattle. Things are only going to keep changing we better get used to it.
ReplyDeleteSo honest, Beethoven is too stereotypical for a dogs name. Toothpaste that stands on the cap... your missing out on life... pretty much the coolest thing since sliced tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I took the ACT and not remembering how to do a couple letters and I wasn't the only one in the room. A lot of people were looking around trying to figure out how to do it. I'm pretty sure I've also never seen a tube of tooth paste that stands on its cap.
ReplyDeleteThis was a good post! I think most of us can agree about the ACT cursive writing and not knowing how. The only thing I sort of disagree with is the Beethoven name for a dog. There is no way that would ever be my dog's name!
ReplyDeleteThis blog has made me think of something that for some reason surpassed me while all the others. In reference to the dogs name, we all have different reasons to do things the way we do, nonetheless with today's generation we are influenced by many things. In the case of Beethoven being a dogs name the movie of Beethoven comes to mind. So it comes back to what and how we are exposed to things. As for my feeling on toothpaste, I am pretty sure it takes up the same amount of space standing up or laying down....but that is just me.
