Basketball

The time I was at my best would be during basketball my senior year.  All throughout my life basketball was my favorite sport.  My freshmen year of high school our basketball team was decent, but after that we went downhill.  By the time my junior year rolled around our basketball team was struggling to even get one win.

When my senior year rolled around I was the only senior on the team.  I knew I had to be the one to push the team.  Our team was very young, and limited to only a few players.  The first game of the season I broke my hand during the third quarter.  Not knowing what I had done to my hand I continued playing the rest of the game thinking I had only jammed my finger.  It was after the game I realized I had done something to my hand.

The next six weeks I had to sit on the bench and cheer from there.  Over time I learned that I could still help out giving pointers to the girls as they came to the bench.  Not being on the court I still fulfilled my leadership position, helping out however I could.
The main thing I learned from this experience was that during life there's going to be unpredictable bumps, that you're going to have to push yourself to get over.  Over time it will all be over with and you'll be able to live the normal lifestyle you were before

  1. Jessica, that stinks! I know how you feel, it definitely stinks to get a sports injury! It is even worse when it's your Senior year. It's cool that you were able to take something positive away from it. (:

  2. Great post! It really says a lot about your personality to make the most of the situation and overcome it like you did. That trait can carry over into your schooling and life too. Keep it up! :)

  3. That would really be upsetting for something like that to happen your senior year. It's a good thing you have a positive attitude so that you could cheer your team on.

  4. I'm glad you found a way to still connect with your team at the time of your injury. I really know what it's like being injured while playing a sport. Finding alternatives to things you can't do, knowing what you are capable of doing, using the talents you do have available, and having a positive attitude will make you successful with everything you do. :)

  6. I really liked your blog Mary. Getting an injure it a sport is hard because you don't know if you will be able to continue the season. Even though you couldn't play for six weeks you stayed positive.

  7. Injuries are always hard to cope with. Being able to continue your leadership role from the bench and not giving up on your team speaks to your character.

  9. I can't believe you didn't realize you broke your hand! I would think that would be extremely painful. It's too bad you had to sit out for that long, but it is great that you gave the girls pointers instead of moping on the bench because you couldn't play. I bet they really looked up to you.

  10. I'm glad you stuck it out and stayed with the team. Younger players can definitely always use some good pointers from older, more experienced players. Good post and great conclusion.
